In a world where community support and compassion often take a back seat, the Pecos Downtown Lions Club (PDLC) stands out as a shining example of how dedicated individuals can drive meaningful change. With nearly a century of service under its belt, the PDLC continues to embody the spirit of giving, transforming lives and fostering a stronger, more connected community in the Town of Pecos City, and beyond.
At the heart of the PDLC’s mission is a commitment to ensuring that every community member has access to essential services, particularly through its eye care initiative. By placing donation boxes for used eyeglasses at a local bank, the PDLC has made it possible for individuals in need to receive much-needed vision support. This effort has not gone unnoticed; the El Paso Del Norte Lions Club chapter has recognized the PDLC for its outstanding contribution to community health.
But the club’s impact doesn’t end with vision care. Each year, the PDLC generously awards scholarships to local students, providing financial assistance to further their education. This year, $4,500 in scholarships was distributed, with $3,000 going to students from Pecos-Barstow-Toyah ISD and $1,500 to those from Balmorhea ISD. These scholarships are not just financial aid; they represent hope and opportunity, opening doors for the next generation of leaders and innovators.
In addition to educational support, the PDLC has made it a priority to address other community needs. The club donates around 150 boxes of crayons each quarter to Trans-Pecos Nursing & Rehabilitation nursing home, bringing joy and a splash of color to the lives of elderly residents. This simple yet thoughtful gesture underscores the PDLC’s belief in the power of small acts of kindness.
The PDLC’s dedication is also evident in its involvement with various local events. From the annual golf tournament, which has become a cherished tradition since 2007, to the local health fair and Christmas parade, the club is deeply embedded in the community’s fabric. David Credille, the current president and a local school principal, highlights his personal connection to these events. Though he may not be a golfer, Credille finds immense satisfaction in cooking for participants, fostering a sense of camaraderie and community spirit with each meal he prepares.
The club’s growth over the past three years is a testament to its increasing impact and the support of its members. Expanding from a small group to a vibrant team of 26, the PDLC reflects the community’s enthusiasm for service and connection. The dedication of members such as Al Pell, Mondo Mandragon, Paul Hinojos, and Cindy Garcia demonstrates a collective commitment to making a difference.
As the Pecos Downtown Lions Club celebrates its 97th anniversary, it stands as a beacon of hope, illustrating how community-driven efforts can create lasting, positive change. The club’s continued success is a reminder that even the smallest acts of kindness can have profound effects, and that a united community can overcome challenges and build a brighter future.
For those inspired by the PDLC’s work and looking to contribute or join in their mission, the club welcomes new members and encourages community involvement.
